Unfair Reporting on AI: The Media’s Blind Spot for Sustainable Infrastructure

AI Public Service Announcement

This is being posted as a public service announcement. We’re in a race against time and the media is quiet. From now through 2030, the race against time is between environmental resources and AI. To date, there has been unfair media reporting on AI, specifically their blind spot for a sustainable infrastructure.

What Is and Is Not Reported

Since the media has a blind spot in their unfair reporting on AI, I’ll explain it here.

What is the media reporting on

  • AI data-center cooling is draining local water supplies
  • AI is consuming to much electricity
  • AI hardware cycles are creating a global e-waste crisis

All the above points are half truths. Each are typical modern day media tactics. Sell fear through sensationalism. What is not being reported is that the tech industry is addressing each point above.

What the media is not reporting on.

  • To put data-center cooling requirements in perspective, read my article AI Drinking The World Day?
  • The consumption of electricity is also selling fear. Read my article AI Power Consumption.
  • E-Waste is not just an AI issue, it’s a global issue and covers everything that contains digital components. Read the Circular Economy to get a balanced perspective.

The Race not Covered by the Media

This is the big, ‘shame on you media’. The media should be all over this race, the good and the bad. This is the race between our global resources and our thirst for all things digital. Right now through 2030 is our danger zone. We hear nothing about this from the media. The race to a sustainable infrastructure should be on every news channel. Given we’re talking about the health of our planet, I would allocate a segment each night on the local, national and international news programs. Within these segments, show us a chart of where we’re at, compared to where we need to be. Let the peoples know what’s going on! I’ll display a graph below showing just that. Thanks to google Gemini AI for helping create this graph.

Sustainable Infrastructure

The tech industry is leading the charge to a sustainable infrastructure. Some may argue that it took long enough. Now that profits are at risk, tech is putting their money behind this push. I can’t argue against that, because I agree with it. AI is simply the latest technology that gets the blame. The truth is our throw away mentality got us to where we are.

Sustainable infrastructure is possible and the race towards a circular economy is on around the globe. This extends beyond corporations and also requires the efforts of individuals and nations. A global problem takes a global solution.

Steps to Sustainable Infrastructure

The steps to a sustainable infrastructure starts with the media. Stop selling us fear and instead take the lead. Be a service to your communities and profession. Report the negatives, yes, but follow up with the positive. Tell us what’s going on, what needs to be done and whether we’re on track to achieving the sustainable infrastructure goal of 2030. In order for this to all work, we need the aid of everyone. Again, a global problem requires a global effort. The media has the ability to be extremely persuasive in changing public opinion which is exactly what we need. To start, here’s what we need reporting on.

  • Nations – Report on what individual nations are doing in the race to 2030. The good and the bad.
  • Corporations – Let us know which corporations are spearheading the effort and which are lagging behind.
  • People – Inform people not to run out and buy the latest and greatest tech gadget unless the manufacture has a clear end-of-life plan in place and operational.

Media – Time to Shine

The media is presented with a fantastic opportunity to shine, to educate and inform. Put your politics to the side and sink your teeth into real-world news on the technology and the environment. This is a global issue and you can be at the forefront with hard investigative reporting. We know the power of the media to influence. Start pointing out the nations and corporations spearheading the efforts towards a sustainable infrastructure and those lagging being. Get the masses involved to do their part.

For myself, I hope the media takes this as their time to shine. To put aside political bias and report on the cold hard facts of what’s going on. Now, more than ever, we need the media to become a thorn in the sides of nations and corporations. We need to media to educate and inform the masses on what’s going on. Regardless of political position, we all share this environment and it will take us all to win the race to 2030.

Summary

We are currently in a race, possibly one of the biggest races we’ve ever been in. The trophy is a sustainable infrastructure and finally our chance to heal the planet. Will you take the lead? Will you grasp this incredible opportunity to inform and educate or will you continue to simply sell fear and sensationalism. Working together, we CAN do this. We CAN will the race.
