Pillars Of Ethical Foundation
The pillars of the ethical foundation are supported by the bedrock and contain universal truths/human rights. The intent is to provide a layer common to all of humanity and not a specific countries view. The following pillars provide for the following:
- Food/Water
- Clothing
- Housing
- Medical Care
- Education
- Security
Purpose
The purpose of the pillars are to guide the development of AI in ways that satisfy our ethical foundation. Projects should attempt to resolve the pressing issues in areas listed above. Additionally, projects can not only solve, but expand each of our pillars in a positive way. It’s important to note that AI, by itself is not enough for this to work. There must be a collaborative effort between both humans and AI to carry out the initiatives shown in the examples below.
Examples
Food/Water
Food is required by all peoples in all countries. As such, having food and water as a pillar in our ethical AI foundation makes sense. Farming techniques, delivery and sorting systems, supply chain, nutrition, the list goes on. You can find detailed examples from Food & Drink.
Water is another need of all peoples in all countries. AI is already helping, from wastewater, education, monitoring and proactively identifying trouble areas as well as adverse weather conditions resulting in water loss. TD Synnex provides a glimpse into what’s going on.
Clothing
Clothing, required by all, is another pillar of our architecture. To start, let’s define a circular economy. A circular economy contains companies and systems that eliminate waste by keeping materials in use through repair, reuse, recycling and remanufacturing. Examples of implementing a circular economy in the textile industry can be found here, the Ellen Macarthur Foundation.
Housing
All peoples, from all countries required food, water and clothing. Our pillars of the AI ethical foundation also contains housing. Another universally accepted need. For our housing needs, AI can assist from design through construction. For further insight and details, you can check out the Bipartisan Policy Center.
Medical Care
Medical care is paramount in any ethical foundation. As such, our foundation has medical care as a pillar. Personalized care, patient segmentation, risk, insurance, remote monitoring and predictive wearables. This is just a start in the possibilities of implementing AI within the health care industry. For more detail, you can check out the use cases provided by Intelisys.
Education
Education is a requirement, especially within advanced civilizations. This is true cross borders. All peoples require education in order to interact and take advantage of everything that is made available. From personalized education, more effectively engaging students, assistive learning. The list goes on. The University of San Diego provides an interesting list of the benefits.
Security
Security is another must have for any AI ethical foundation. There is a pillar specifically for just that. As we feed, provide water, clothing, medical care and education to all peoples, it’s a responsibility that we provide security. Anything from personal and home security, to borders, large scale events and terrorists attacks. Humans, working with AI are there to help. Some details on current implementations can be found here, provided by IA – Intelligent Automation Network.
Summary
In summary it’s important to again point out that AI is not an end-all, be-all. AI is not the silver bullet in resolving the worlds issues with respect to universal truths and human rights. It will take collaboration between humans and AI to get the job done. If you’re interested you can google any of the above topics, or ask your favorite AI assistant for help. These aren’t utopian dreams. These are things being addressed today. Should we fail to accomplish any of the examples within our pillars above, it won’t be because the technology isn’t there, or that the technology failed. It would fail because of the priorities set by the decision makers of the world.
